Origins of Craps
One prevalent theory states that the game of craps, came from a very old game played during the middle ages called Hazard. Further research has revealed a good chance that Hazard actually came from an Arab game that was played for hundreds of years before the middle ages called “Azzahr”. Like Craps, this game also used tiny numbered cubes. It was so popular that it spread throughout the Mediterranean before moving into France.
When Azzahr moved into France, Arab regions had a reputation for being a dangerous place to travel through. Explorers would return to England and France with tales of vicious battles, and arid inhospitable lands. Due to this reputation people were quick to change the traditional Arab name of the game to Hazard, reflecting the notoriety of the game’s region of origin.
Around 1500AD the game Hazard moved from France to England. According to historical documents, Englanders called the lowest roll in the game a “Crabs” roll. When the game moved to the French colony of Acadia in the early 1700's, the game was renamed “Crabes” due to the French language. As the game spread to the English colonies however, the French name was anglicized into Crabs.
It is a mater of some debate, but another theory exists that puts the potential origin of craps sometime during the height of the Roman Empire. But instead of using dice to produce random values, pig knuckles from the bones of slaughtered animals were used. The game was very popular among the Roman soldiers, and ultimately permeated the whole of Roman society. It is not known exactly how the game was played, but there is evidence to suggest as well that the Romans may have even moved from pig bones to painted rocks, taking it even closer to modern day craps.
Despite the differing opinions on how the game came to France, there is little dispute that the game first made an appearance in north America in Acadia, a region later renamed to Nova Scotia. When the Acadian Colony was taken over buy the English, the homeless French traveled north America looking for a new place to settle, eventually founding Louisiana. It was here in the famous city of games and entertainment that craps began to climb to massive heights of popularity.
As craps grew in popularity across North America, the game evolved and changed several times. The most notable evolution of the game was in the number of betting options. As craps was played more and more, and peoples skill increased more bets were invented all the time to give players greater flexibility and control over their game. Today Craps is known worldwide for having the most number of betting options in the gambling world. The result is a fun and dynamic games that you can play for hours and nor get bored.
Although some people may be apprehensive of the craps due to the high number of seemingly complex bets, it is important to remember that the actual number of bets possible does not reflect what is necessary to play the game. For instance a person can play a perfectly exciting and, most importantly, winnable game of craps by knowing only a 5th of the possible bets out there. Don’t be scared. Give craps a try and you won’t be disappointed.
